Standing as a tribute to the Duke of Wellington and his victory at the Battle of Waterloo, Wellington Monument is an iconic local landmark to the people of Somerset and Devon. Sited in its prominent location on top of Wellington Hill, it can be seen for miles around, especially when passing along the M5 motorway. Close to the edge of the Blackdown Hills, it has had an interesting history. The monument is said to be the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world, and from its troubled construction to its conservation and repair up to the present day. the building has been subjected to periods of abandonment, failed repairs and even lightning strikes. Yet, it has endured and remains atop the hills for all to see!
