There has been a windmill at this location in Waltham, North East Lincolnshire since the mid 1660s. The present one, built in 1878, has been restored as a six sail, six-storeyed mill that towers over the nearby properties. It is one of few in the area still working today and is a popular local visitor attraction.

Various cultures see windmills as symbols of good luck. For example in China, to wear a piece of jewellery that depicts a windmill is said to blow away bad luck and change the fortunes of the wearer. They also feature in religious beliefs and in various pieces of music and literature. But today, to see something that seems so ancient and so indicative of our past agricultural practices, sitting within a modern landscape, is perhaps still quite a magical sight to behold.
