The iconic and well-trod causeway from Marazion to St Michael's Mount, is filled with tales of giants and angels, of sieges and occupations, of the ordinary lives of fisherfolk and tradespeople and pilgrims, all attracted by the mystery surrounding the tidal island.

Its Cornish name of Karrek Loos yn Koos "the grey rock in a wood" may have connections to a folk memory of Mount's Bay before it was flooded, suggesting the area of the mount was set in woodland.

Crowned with a medieval church and castle, and surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, the island is home to close-knit community of about 30 islanders, many of whom take on roles of stewardship of the island and its associated tourist attractions.
