Do you recognise them? This clump of 140 trees sit atop a hill overlooking the A30 as you head from Devon into Cornwall and back again. For me, they always herald that point in the journey when you’re edging closer to Cornwall and ‘holiday time’!

Beloved by many locals, the sight is known by many different names. There’s ‘Cornwall beyond’, ‘grandma’s trees’, ‘nearly home’ or ‘coming home trees’, ‘the unicorn’s wood’ and ‘fairy wood’. What do you call them?
There’s an abundance of folklore surrounding the trees and their reason for being. My favourite is the belief that the trees mark an ancient burial site – that the landmark was intended to show where a king was buried. I do love me some ancient history and legend!
