Located on the edge of a housing estate close to Barnsley in South Yorkshire, is Monk Bretton Priory or what remains of it. Originally a monastery under the Cluniac order, it was founded in 1154, and has had a long and fascinating history. It is a remarkable example of a 12th century monastery that has endured conflict, changes in ownership and use, civil unrest, world wars, modern town planning and even vandalism. It was been the site of numerous archaeological excavations.

The priory is cared for by English Heritage and supported by the Friends of Monk Bretton Priory, a charitable organisation devoted to promoting the priory to visitors. You find out more on their Facebook page – it provides further details of the priory's history.
The new version of this well-known local landmark offers a warmer and more textural feel. I have chosen to capture the priory ruins as night falls, with a little nod to some of the uplighters that has been used in at past events.
