Located on the Esplanade in Weymouth, this striking structure commemorates the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
Interestingly, the tower was paid for by public subscription, with £100 collected during the Jubilee Day celebrations. A suggestion was made by the Jubilee Committee to erect a clock tower, an idea that was enthusiastically greeted by the local council. The clock was donated by Sir Henry Edwards and the gas company agreed to light it in perpetuity, with the Weymouth Corporation providing the stone base.
According to Historic England, the bold coloured tower is described as being a "florid but characteristic enrichment to the sea-front"!
