Once an international centre of ironmaking and coal mining, the village was visited by aristocrats and royalty, a showpiece for the Earls Fitzwilliam. A hive of industry and innovation, the villagers were involved in the making of many famous bridges and civil engineering projects across the land, and the millions of tonnes of coal produced was sent to all parts of the globe. That rich history has left an extraordinary variety of archaeological sites and buildings and today the centre houses cafes, independent businesses, artist studios, and seasonal events and exhibitions.
