Built as a breakwater, The Cobb protects the harbour and town of Lyme Regis from the open sea.

The earliest mention of this local landmark dates back to 1294, but no-one quite knows why it has always been referred to as The Cobb!
Rebuilt from Portland stone in the 1800s after a severe storm damaged the older structure, it has featured in novels and films including The French Lieutenant’s Woman starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons!
