The pitgear that remains atop this large, deep mining site on the edge of Barnsley has been brought to colourful life as a way to commemorate the hundreds of lives lost in what was known as the worst mining disaster in English history (the Oaks Disaster).

Set within green space and close to the Trans-Pennine Way, Barnsley Main still remains somewhat hidden, its dark and sombre past lurking beneath the modern landscape of housing estates, landscaping and a network of busy roads.
It is now a symbol of the town's proud mining heritage, and offers opportunity for historical and social discussion, learning and understanding. In 2012, it was successfully granted Grade II listed status.
