Located in Holyrood Park, the extinct volcano of Suidhe Artair (the Gaelic name of Arthur's Seat) is a dominant feature on the local Edinburgh skyline.
Robert Louis Stevenson once described Arthur's Seat as "a hill for magnitude, a mountain in virtue of its bold design". I think this is fabulous fitting. Of it's name, people have suggested in links to King Arthur, with the notion that is was a suggested location for the legendary Camelot.
In popular culture it is much featured, from Mark Shelley's Frankenstein, to Jules Verne's The Underground City, and David Nicholl's One Day, recently regenerated on Netflix! And of course, there's Sir Walter Scott, who, in his "General Preface" to the Waverley Novels, he describes Arthur's Seat as one of the "solitary and romantic surroundings" he explored during the 1780s as a schoolboy, accompanied by a close friend. Together, they shared "endless tales of knight-errantry, battles, and enchantments."
