The *Old Waggon Road was another favourite route over in the next village of Silkstone, and I loved pottering (and often cantering) along the old track that was once another thriving artery of the local coal industry. It’s characterised by the old stone blocks still visible that held the rail tracks in place for the horse-drawn coal waggons. I had forgotten just how historically rich this area is – essentially once agricultural, it became a hive of industrial activity.
