The *Old Waggon Road was another favourite route over in the next village of Silkstone, and I loved pottering (and often cantering) along the old track that was once another thriving artery of the local coal industry. It’s characterised by the old stone blocks still visible that held the rail tracks in place for the horse-drawn coal waggons. I had forgotten just how historically rich this area is – essentially once agricultural, it became a hive of industrial activity. The original mast, constructed from metal, froze each year until finally collapsing, forcing the rebuilt structure to be constructed from concrete. I always loved hearing this story when I was small; it would have been quite the local interest piece (no one was harmed by the way!).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe new mast is actually the tallest freestanding structure in the UK, measuring 329m (a whole 19m taller than The Shard). To quote the photographer of the composition you see depicted in this design: \"it's basically the same height as the Eiffel Tower!\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI reached out to Jason after seeing his image on a Facebook page called Beautiful Britain seeking his permission to base a digital design on his photograph.
