Local legend tells of one of the sails dramatically detaching and crashing to the road below, prompting the removal of the remaining sails around 1868.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFollowing this, a gas engine was installed – a nod to the shift from wind to industrial power – and the mill continued to operate, possibly even as a chalk (whiting) mill, well into the mid-20th century. The structure itself has adapted with the times, evolving from a place of production to one of community and connection.
